ABSTRACT
In this article we present the results of a study in which we observed how recent changes in the lives ofmiddle-class women have affected contemporary men. We interviewed 5 men from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, aged 28 to 45, married with women who work outside the home. The interviews were semi-structured, taperecordedand fully transcribed, and the resulting texts were submitted to a discourse analysis. We observedin their discourses that professional women were appreciated, although their speech reinforces the idea ofpaid work as positively valued. We could also note an increase in the participation of women in the familybudget as well as of men in household care, although this participation is seen more in terms of help. Theresults, then, seem to point to some changes in the behavior of men, at least in terms of discourse, althoughthese changes still run into old ideas related to the role and position of men and women in society.
