Introduction:
Martial arts have been practiced for more than a thousand years, and there are still in some of them, such as Karate, several gaps in anthropometric and nutritional knowledge. This paper aims to establish the anthropometric profile of the typical university Karate athlete for comparison with international standards, with the determination of total energy expenditure (TEE), sweat rate (SR), and analysis of the potential risk of dehydration.Methodology:
During an international meeting, we selected top rate university Karate athletes and took measures of weight, height, seven skin folds and body circumferences, percentage of body fat (%BF), TEE and SR after one day of heavy training. Results:
The athletes are on average 24.0 ± 5.8 years old; have mean weight of 68.0 ± 11.1 kg; %BF of 10.5 ± 3.0 %; and a mean practice time of 7.7 ± 5.2 years. The TEE is close to that of triathletes (4,470 kcal); SR of 4.9 ± 1.7 mL/min, with a significant hydric reduction with respect to the total weight of 1.4 ± 0.3 %, corresponding to a light dehydration. Conclusion:
In relation to the international competitors, Brazilian athletes presented a higher percentage of lean mass; which is an important factor, increasing the muscle explosion and power needed in Karate. The TEE is high, and together with weather conditions and the type of clothes used by the athletes a heavy kimono can increase the risk of thermal fatigue, even with such a low SR.
