ABSTRACT
Among the alternative critical power models, we can highlight those related to the aerobic inertia and the exponential one. However, until the present moment, there are no studies designed to test the validity of these models under different experimental conditions. Once critical power (PC) theoretically represents the maximal intensity maintained by aerobic processes without the utilization of anaerobic energy stores, its estimate should not be influenced by the previous manipulation of the anaerobic reserves (CTA). The aim of the present work was to verify the effect of previous exercise on the parameter estimates derived from the exponential and aerobic inertia models. Sixteen subjects underwent predictive trials without and with previous partial depletion of CTA (SD and CD). After the partial depletion of 60% of CTA, there was 30 s of rest period. The critical power estimates - PCinércia-SD and PCexponencial-SD were not different compared to their pairs in the CD situation (P > 0.05), showing high correlations (r = 0.978 and 0.951, respectively). Nevertheless, there was a difference between PCinércia-SD and PCexponencial-SD in both SD and CD (P < 0.01). However, the correlations between PC estimates derived from the distinct models in the same experimental settings were high (r = 0.989 SD; r = 0.981 CD). Therefore, it was concluded that previous severe intensity exercise, followed by short rest period, does not affect the PCinércia and PCexponencial estimates.
