ABSTRACT
Eccentric action has been studied because it optimizes muscle adaptive responses to resistance training. These responses encompass higher strength gains and hypertrophy. These adaptations seem to result from events occurring in the neuromuscular structure because of different neural and mechanical characteristics associated with this type of muscle action. Muscle damage, higher tension and stretching on active fibers appear to maximize muscle responses to resistance training with eccentric actions.
