ABSTRACT
Purpose:
To evaluate the influence of surface treatment and the use of silane on the repair bond strength of composite resin to ceramic using a shear test. Methods:
A total of 120 ceramic specimens were fabricated and divided into six groups (n = 20 each) submitted to different surface treatments [TI C] - diamond bur; [TIS] - diamond bur and silane; [T2C] - air abrasion; [T2S] - air abrasion and silane; [T3C] - hydrofluoric acid, and [T3S] - hydrofluoric acid and silane. After surface preparation, the adhesive was applied and the specimens were restored with composite resin, thermocycled and subjected to shear bond strength testing. The data were analyzed statistically by analysis of variance, followed by the Tukey test, with the levei of significance set at 5%.Results:
Significant differences in repair bond strength were observed between the different types of mechanical surface treatment, with [TlC] = 19.8, [TIS] = 38.2, [T2C] = 28.9, [T2S] = 38.5, [T3C] = 44.7, and [T3S] = 46.4.Conclusion:
Surface treatment of the ceramic with hydrofluoric acid was the most effective, with no difference between air abrasion and the diamond bur. Silane effectively increased the strength of the repair bond to the ceramic substrate when prepared with a diamond bur and air abrasion, while no effect was observed when silane was combined with hydrofluoric acid. The combination of surface treatment and silane is the best repair technique, with acid conditioning and silane being the method of choice.
