RESUMO

Introdução: A necessidade de entendimento das alterações do músculo masseter nas disfunções temporomandibulares direciona cada vez mais o cirurgião-dentista a conviver com profissionais da área de saúde num enfoque multidisciplinar, que parece ser a melhor condição de amparar pacientes portadores de enfermidade tão complexa. Objetivo: Avaliar por meio de eletromiografia as possíveis alterações do músculo masseter quanto ao valor da tensão muscular (RMS) em indivíduos normais e com disfunção da articulação temporomandibular (DTM). Material e métodos: Foram selecionados 20 indivíduos voluntários, sendo 11 normais e nove com DTM, apresentando dentição completa e oclusão tipo classe I de Angle. Resultados: Encontrou-se diferença estatística significativa nos valores referentes aos dados eletromiográficos relacionados à tensão RMS em repouso e em máxima intercuspidação, nos lados direito e esquerdo do músculo masseter para ambos os grupos. Além disso, os valores obtidos da tensão RMS por eletromiografia seguem um padrão matemático que permitiu a elaboração de uma equação de reta de regressão linear traduzida por EMG-MIC = 528,75 ? (54,76 x EMG-REP). Conclusão: Os dados conseguidos no exame de eletromiografia foram eficazes na comprovação das mudanças fisiológicas ocorridas no músculo masseter no grupo com DTM em relação ao grupo normal.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The need to understand the changes of the masseter muscle in the temporomandibular disorders has been leading more often the dental surgeon to work together with other health professionals, with a multidisciplinary focus, which seems to be the best condition to help patients with such complex disorder. Objective: To evaluate the possible modifications of the masseter muscle regarding the muscle tension value (RMS) in patients with and without temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) through electromyography. Material and methods: 20 volunteers were selected (11 without TMD and 9 with TMD), with full dentition and Angle class I occlusion. Results: Statistically significant difference was found in the values of the electromyographic data regarding muscle tension at rest and during maximum intercuspidation in the right and left sides of the masseter muscle for both groups. Besides, the obtained values of the muscle tension through electromyography follow a mathematical standard that allowed the creation of a linear regression equation EMG-MIC = 528.75 ? (54.76 x EMG-REP). Conclusion: Data obtained through electromyography were effective to prove the physiological changes in the masseter muscle in the group with TMD in comparison to the group without TMD.
