Avaliação da força de mordida durante o tratamento da mordida cruzada posterior funcional / Bite force evaluation during early treatment of posterior crossbite

A manutenção de condições normais da função mastigatória é determinante para o correto crescimento e desenvolvimento de suas estruturas. Sendo assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi o de apresentar dois casos clínicos de correção precoce da mordida cruzada posterior funcional, acompanhando as mudanças ocorridas na morfologia facial e na força de mordida máxima decorrentes do tratamento. Duas crianças, com 4,8 e 6,3 anos, portadoras de dentição decídua e mista inicial, respectivamente, foram tratadas por meio de aparelho removível de expansão lenta da maxila; após a obtenção do descruzamento da mordida, seguiu-se um período de três meses de contenção. Em ambos os casos, observou-se aumento da força de mordida máxima após o tratamento, apesar da criança com dentição mista ter apresentado diminuição em sua magnitude durante o tratamento, a qual voltou a aumentar após o período de contenção. Além disso, a assimetria postural da mandíbula observada por meio de fotografias frontais diminuiu com o tratamento instituído. Concluiu-se que a correção precoce da mordida cruzada proporcionou o desenvolvimento funcional dos músculos mastigatórios e diminuição da assimetria postural mandibular nos casos apresentados.

ABSTRACT

The maintenance of normal conditions of the masticatory function is determinant for the correct growth and development of its structures. In this way, the aim of this study was to show two clinical cases of early correction of the functional crossbite, following the occurred changes in face morphology and in the maximum bite force after the treatment. Two children, with 4.8 and 6.3 years of age, in the deciduous and early mixed dentition, respectively, were treated by means of removable maxillary expansion plates; after the improvement of crossbite, treatment was followed by a retention period of three months. In both cases, the maximum bite force increased after the treatment, despite the child in the mixed dentition having presented reduction in its magnitude during the treatment, which showed increase after the retention period. Moreover, the mandibular postural asymmetry observed by means of frontal photographs decreased after treatment. This study showed that the early intervention of crossbite provided functional development of the masticatory muscles and the reduction of mandibular postural asymmetry in the reported clinical cases.
