Adesão e conhecimento de medidas de proteção individual contra a hepatite B entre estudantes de odontologia / Compliance and knowledge of individual protective barriers against hepatitis B among dental students

RESUMO

Verificar a adesão e o conhecimento de medidas de proteção individual contra a Hepatite B entre estudantes de Odontologia da UEPB. Para isso, foi realizado um estudo transversal, por meio de um questionário semi-estruturado, no qual participaram 169 estudantes divididos em dois grupos (com e sem atividades clínica). A prevalência de alunos que tiveram a doença foi de 5,5%. O uso de luvas e jaleco foi uma constante e percentuais de 96,2%, 95,3% e 56,6% afirmaram que sempre utilizavam gorro, máscara e óculos de proteção, respectivamente. O uso do jaleco fora do ambiente clínico foi relatado por 70,8%. Um percentual de 9,4% já sofreu um acidente ocupacional, sendo que 60% foi do tipo pérfuro-cortante, constituindo-se a lavagem rigorosa o procedimento adotado em 45,5% dos casos. A imunização contra o VHB foirealizada por 69,8% dos alunos (p = 0,022), 41,6% tomou três doses da vacina (p < 0,001) e 1,8% realizou o teste da soroconversão (p < 0,001). A vacinação juntamente com a aderência às medidas de precaução padrão são fundamentais para evitar a transmissão do VHB, visando proteger os profissionais, seus femiliares e pacientes. O ensino desta temática é um compromisso ético, tanto das Instituições de Ensino Superior, como dos educadores.

ABSTRACT

To verify the compliance and the knowledge of individual protection barriers against Hepatitis B among dental students of the State University of Paraíba (BR). A cross-sectional study was developed, using a semi-structured questionnaire, with 169 students divided in two groups (with and without clinical activity). The prevalence of students who had the disease was 5.5%. The use of gloves and dental clinic coat was a constant and percentages of 96.2%, 95.3% and 56.6% stated that they always used mask, cap and protective eyewear, respectively. 70.8% also used the dental clinic coat outside the clinics. A percentage of 9.4% has suffered occupational exposures, and 60% of these were piercing-cutting, being the rigorous wash the procedure adopted in 45.5% of the cases. The immunization against HBV was performed by 69.8% of the students (p = 0.022), 41,6% took all three doses of vaccine (p<0.001) and only 1.8% performed the test of seroconversion (p<0.001). Vaccination together with compliance to the individual protection barriers are essential to avoid transmission of HBV, to protect the professionals, their families and patients. The teaching of this subject is an ethical commitment, both for the higher education institutions and for the educators.
