ABSTRACT
Enterococcus faecalis's ability to adhere and antibacterial effect of natural and synthetic compounds were studied in 25 glass fiber posts. The posts were submerged in 5 mL suspension of E. faecalis standardized in 10 cells/mL and incubated at 37ºC/1h. After wash in saline solution, they were divided into 5 groups (n = 5); while the control group (GI) received no treatment, the other groups were treated with chlorhexidine gluconate 0.12% (GII); ethanolic extract of melaleuca 12% (GIII), alcohol 70% (GIV) and ethanolic extract of propolis 12% (GV) for 5 minutes each. The posts were washed in saline solution for 30 seconds, aliquots of 0.1mL were plated in duplicate, on agar BHI and incubated at 37ºC/24h. Then, it was determined the number of CFU/mL E. faecalis recovered from each post. The average and standard deviation obtained from the logarithm of CFU/mL were GI (5.16±0.11); GII (3.06±1.13); GIII (4.58±1.70); GIV (3.20±1.70); GV (1.85±1.99). The Kruskal-Wallis-Dunn test showed statistically significant difference (p<0.05) between group I and groups II, IV and V. Melaleuca (GIII) presented no significant antibacterial action, but the others products may be used successfully to control bacterial adherence in fiber posts.
