ABSTRACT
Researches in other countries have showed that reminder-letters can be used as a useful tool in order to produce improvement on breast cancer screening rates. The effect of their use in Brazil isstill unknown. OBJECTIVE: To verify the effect of sending reminder-letters to women at the age of being screened and the receptivity of women to this kind of initiative. MATERIAL AND METHOD:Two hundred and seventy-three letters were sent out to women that were eligible. The letters were dispatched one month before completing one year of the last mammography. Three months after the letter was sent, a phone call was made and the patient was interviewed.RESULTS: All letters were sent out and a telephone contact was achieved with 108 women (39.6%). From the 108 interviewed women, 76% (n = 82) received the letter. From these 82women, 54.9% (n = 45) had an appointment with their doctors. From the 26 women that hadn't received the letter, 46.1% (n = 12) had had an appointment with their doctors. All the 108 interviewed women (100%) said they wished to remain being reminded of the breast cancer screening. Other results will be presented. CONCLUSION:The reminder-letters were not able to produce improvement of breast cancer screening attendance rate. Women seemed to be receptive to the initiative of using reminder-letters.
