ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the variability among the 5 vertical index components, used to determine facial pattern in Ricketts analysis. Lateral caphalograms were used to evaluate 49 children (29 females and 22 males), between 7 and 10 years old with normal occlusion. The cephalograms were digitized using a scanner and then transferred to the Radiocef cephalometric program. Anova statistical analysis was used to evaluate the significant differences among the five compared means, and the Bonferroni multiple comparison test was used to identify which factors were different within themselves. The significance level elected was 1%. The were no statistical significant differences when facial axis, facial angle, mandibular arch were compared. However, there was a statistically significant difference (p< 0.001) when the lower face height mean was compared to those of facial axis, facial angle and mandibular plane respectively. There was no significant difference between lower face height and mandibular arch. It was concluded that the different results presented by each vertical index component in classifying the sample group, indicate the need to redefine the norms attributed to the 5 vertical index factors.
