ABSTRACT
This study investigates the social and demographic profile and possible musculoskeletal disorders in dentists and verifies if they receive ergonomic information related to posture and workplace. These data were gathered from 38 professionals working in private practice with different specialties. Was used a questionnaire, including questions regarding musculoskeletal symptoms, occupational aspects, and lifestyle. The results showed that dentists experience pain mostly in the spine and upper limbs. The occupational activities that required inclination of the trunk, static posture and/or elevated position of the upper limbs were considered exhausting for the musculoskeletal system. The majority of the sample (89 percent) had knowledge about preventive ergonomic positions. This research showed that dentists need orientation about appropriate postures to perform occupational activities with the goal of avoiding musculoskeletal and posture injuries due to their profession.
