ABSTRACT
A cross-sectional descriptive investigation was carried out with the aim of characterizing infant cancer from the epidemiologic point of view in Ciego de Ávila province from January to December 2008. The sample was composed of the total of parents and guardians, with inclusion criterion and signature of informed consent. A structured interview was applied to them, which was validated by expert criteria. The data were distributed in tables, and commentaries. The Acute Leukaemias were those of greatest prevalence. The North area contributed to a greater proportional and crude mortality with 10.7 deceased x c/100 and 0.05 x c/ 1000 inhab. respectively besides a greater rate of incidence, with 0.8 000 x c/10 inhab. The greatest prevalence of oncological diseases corresponded to Chambas municipality. The specific rates belonged to the group of 1 to 4 years of age and a precocious diagnosis of the disease was only carried out to the 16.3 percent. It was then concluded that a promotion work should be done, as well as teaching and investigation to diminish mortality by infant cancer in our province.
