RESUMEN
Se realizó un estudio observacional de tipo descriptivo y corte transversal en 68 adolescentes del Colegio Presidente Kennedy, perteneciente a la comunidad Julián Blanco, parroquia Petare Norte, municipio Sucre, estado Distrito Metropolitano de Caracas en la República Bolivariana de Venezuela; en el período comprendido de septiembre a diciembre del 2006 con el objetivo de evaluar el nivel cognoscitivo sobre la higiene bucal y gingivitis crónica en estudiantes de 14 años de edad. Se aplicó una encuesta con preguntas cerradas de forma individual. Los resultados de este estudio revelaron que el 95.6 por ciento de los adolescentes encuestados sobre higiene bucal respondieron de forma incorrecta la pregunta relacionada con estructuras incluidas en el cepillado y el 72.1 por ciento de ellos respondieron incorrectamente la pregunta de relación del cepillado con la aparición de la gingivitis. El 86.6 por ciento del sexo femenino y el 50,0 por ciento del sexo masculino presentaron un nivel cognoscitivo medio sobre higiene bucal. El sexo masculino presentó un 52.6 por ciento de conocimientos inadecuados sobre gingivitis crónica. Se concluyó que hubo un predominio del nivel cognoscitivo medio sobre higiene bucal e inadecuado sobre gingivitis crónica en los adolescentes(184).
ABSTRACT
We carried out an observational, descriptive, transversal study with 68 teenagers of the President Kennedy College, President Kennedy College, Community Julian Blanco, North Petare Parrish, Municipality of Sucre, Caracas Metropolitan District State, in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, during the period from September to December 2006 with the objective of evaluating the cognitive level on oral hygiene and chronic gingivitis in 14-years-old students. A closed questions survey was applied to each of the students. The results of this study showed that 95.6 percent of the students questioned about oral hygiene answered incorrectly the question related with the structures included in brushing, and 72.1 percent of them answered incorrectly the question related with brushing and the manifestation of gingivitis. 86.6 percent of the female teenagers and 50.0 percent of the male ones had a medium cognitive level on oral hygiene. The male teenagers had a 52.6 percent of inadequate knowledge on chronic gingivitis. It was concluded that there was a medium cognitive level on oral hygiene and an inadequate one among the teenagers (184).
