ABSTRACT
Globally, cervical cancer is the second most common malignancy after breast cancer to affect women. Nearly three fourths of all cases occur in developing countries. During the last twenty years the introduction and application of screening programs has been credited with reducing (nearly by one third) the incidence of cervical cancer in the United States. An association between cervical cancer and sexually transmitted human papillomavirus infection has been established years past. HPV/DNA is implicated in the pathogenesis of more than 90% of preinvasive and invasive cervical lesions. Twenty-one (21%) of all cervical cancer cases are diagnosed in sexually active young women who desire to preserve their fertility. This article reviews current management strategies for microinvasive cervical cancer and considers the mechanisms of therapeutic action.
