ABSTRACT
This article aims to reflect the suffering in the perspective of health care. In so doing, it investigates the possibilities of a cluster of people as a space of embracing states of suffering as well as the construction of new ways to deal with it. It presents a part of the results of a study about the experience of a social group of women living at the slums of ?Maré?,in the city of Rio de Janeiro. In order to understand the meaning of the experience for these women, semi-structured interviews were done with some of the participants of suchcluster. This material was examined, taking into consideration the Collective Subject Discourse. The results indicated that living in clusters, where there is such a sense of embracement, tolerance and mutual respect, results in a sense of belong ingand well-being, besides facilitating the development of new ways of dealing with suffering. There was also evidence that the cluster is an important way to handle the ?pervasive suffering?, that is, a state of malaise that is presented bynonspecific complaints that could not be classified according to clinical or psychiatric nosology.
