RESUMO

O tema da espiritualidade vem ocupando espaçocrescente na medicina e saúde coletiva. São inúmeros ostrabalhos internacionais mostrando a associação entre vidareligiosa e espiritualidade com as condições de saúde dapopulação e o processo de recuperação de doenças. Noentanto, pouca ênfase tem sido dada ao estudo do significadoda espiritualidade para as ações coletivas em saúde.No Brasil, a forte presença de práticas de Educação Popularem Saúde tem possibilitado reflexões sobre os caminhosda luta política pela saúde nas comunidades. O autor destetrabalho está envolvido há 30 anos em práticas de EducaçãoPopular em Saúde e participa ativamente do movimentode educadores populares brasileiros no campo da saúde,em que este tema vem sendo debatido desde meados dadécada de 1990. Ele procura sistematizar o debate que vemocorrendo sobre o significado da espiritualidade na luta pelasaúde nas comunidades.

ABSTRACT

The theme of spirituality is increasingly appearing inmedicine and public health. Innumerable internationalstudies show an association between a religious and spirituallife with the health conditions of a population and theprocess of recuperation from disease. Nevertheless, littleattention has been paid to the study of the significance ofspirituality for group activities in healthcare. In Brazil, thestrong presence of Popular Education in Health has offeredconsiderations concerning the political struggle for health incommunities. The author of this work has been involvedin activities relating to Popular Education in Health for 30years and actively participates in the movement of grassroots Brazilian educators in the area of health - a themedebated from the mid 1990s. He attempts to systematizethe current debate regarding the significance of spiritualityin the struggle for health in the community.
