Antecedentes: La influenza es una enfermedad respiratoria viral. Se han registrado diversas pandemias de influenza a lo largo de los años. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo presentar modelos que permitan construir escenarios del comportamiento de la influenza en una pandemia. Métodos: El impacto de una pandemia de influenza en México se estimó utilizando los modelos de los programas FluAid. y FluSurge. Para obtener modelos mínimo, más probable y máximo, se utilizaron tasas de ataque de 15, 25 y 35%. Se estableció una serie de supuestos sobre la duración de la pandemia, hospitalización y mortalidad. Resultados: Si no se llevaran a cabo intervenciones de mitigación de la pandemia, con una tasa de ataque de 25% se estima que ocurrirían 54 104 defunciones. En el escenario de mayor probabilidad se calculan 250 829 hospitalizaciones. Se esperarían casi 15 millones de consultas externas por la pandemia en las ocho semanas de duración del evento. Conclusiones: Los resultados aquí presentados refuerzan la necesidad de desarrollar planes de contingencia ante la amenaza que puede representar una pandemia de influenza para la salud pública en México.
ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND: Influenza is a viral respiratory disease. Several influenza pandemics have taken place during previous years. This paper aims to describe models that allow construction of influenza behavior scenarios during a pandemia. METHODS: The impact of an influenza pandemic in Mexico was estimated using models from the FluAid and FluSurge computer software. To obtain minimum, most probable and maximum models, 15, 25 and 35% attack rates were analyzed. A series of assumptions were established including pandemic duration, hospitalization and mortality rates. RESULTS: With an attack rate of 25%, if no interventions to mitigate the pandemic were implemented, 54 104 estimated deaths would occur. In the most probable scenario, an estimate of hospitalizations that would occur is 250 829. More than 14 million medical consultations attributable to the pandemic are expected in the eight-week period that the event lasts. CONCLUSIONS: The results presented herein emphasize the need to develop contingency plans to face the threat that an influenza pandemic represents for Mexico's public health system.
