ABSTRACT
Objective: This study was performed in Baldim city in the state of Minas Gerais, southern of Brazil to determine the factors related to childhood malnourishment. Method: Height and weight measures were obtained of 194 children age below five years. A questionnaire was answered by mothers about socio-economic and demographic variables. Statistical tests calculated through Epilnfo: Fisher and Yates test with 5% level of significance, and multivariate analysis based or logistic regression. Cut-off points for diagnosis of malnutrition used: -2 score Z, -1 score Z and percentile 10. Results: For weight/age index prevalence was 7,9%, 30,9% and 22,1%. For weight/height index 3,1%, 20,9% and 13,7% and for height/age 10,4%, 29,5% and 22,6%. The act of not breast-feeding was statistically associated with malnourishment classified by height-for-age and weight-for-age indexes. Not ideal house conditions have a direct influence on malnourihsment, being the only risk factor not influenced by others. Conclusion: High levels of childhood malnutrition were associated with poor living condition of families and with lower rates of breastfeeding. Therefore, such conditions such be a target for changing situation in city of Baldin in the prevention of infant malnutrition.
