Los primeros santiagueros que ejercieron la medicina como ciencia / The first people from Santiago that worked in medicine as a science

RESUMEN

Se presentan las semblanzas de los diez primeros médicos oriundos de Santiago de Cuba, que ejercieron la ciencia de diagnosticar y tratar las enfermedades en los años finales del siglo XVIII y el primer tercio del XIX. Los datos que sirvieron de fuente para la confección de esta obra de referencia se extrajeron básicamente del Archivo Central de la Universidad de La Habana, así como de los archivos de las iglesias y parroquias donde fueron bautizados estos precursores de la práctica médica nacidos en territorio santiaguero. La escasa información encontrada en esos lugares se procesó del modo más conveniente para sacar a la luz los nombres de estos galenos, que deben ser conocidos por las generaciones actuales y futuras de profesionales de la salud. El presente trabajo, que aspira a cumplir ese propósito, trata asimismo de constituirse de modesto tributo a su memoria.

ABSTRACT

The biographical sketch of the first ten physicians from Santiago de Cuba, that worked in the science of diagnosing and treating the diseases by the end of the XVIII century and the first third of the XIX century are presented. Data that served as the source to make this reference work were taken basically from the Central Record of Havana University, as well as from the files of churches and parish churches where these people of the medicine practice born in Santiago were baptized. The few information found in those places was processed in the most suitable way to bring to light the names of these physicians, that should be known by the current and future generations of health professionals. This work, aimed at fulfilling that purpose, also tries to become itself as modest tribute to their memory.
