O idoso independente e a percepção do cuidador familiar sobre a reabilitação geriátrica / The dependent elderly and the perception of family caregivers on the geriatric rehabilitation

RESUMO

As mudanças epidemiológicas decorrentes do processo de reorganização da atenção à saúde do idoso no país como um todo. Significativa parcela de idosos do país é portadora de múltiplas doenças crônico-degenerativas que podem ou não levar a limitações no desenolvimento de sua capacidade funcional. Mediante essa avaliação, o idoso será classificado como independente ou dependente 9 em maior ou menor grau), ou como sendo portador de incapacidade funcional quando houver limitação na realização em duas ou mais atividades da vida diária. A condição de dependência pode ser observada durante sua hospitalização e alta apesar da cura ou reparo da condição pelo qual ele foi internado e, após esse período, a família voluntariamente ou pela existência de outras alternativas, tem assumido o principal papel de prestadora de cuidados a esses idosos. No entanto, isto tem ocorrido sem que sejam sistematizadas ações de apoio e ensino aos cuidadores familiares. Frente ao aumento da proporção de idosos, a reabilitação geriátrica tende a ocupar um espaço cada vez maior na saúde pública...

ABSTRACT

Epidemiological changes resulting from the process of population aging are responsible for the urgent need for reorganization of attention of elderly people's health in Brazil as a whole. A significant portion of elderly people in the country are carriers of multiple chronic-degenerative diseases which may or may not give rise to limitations in the performance of their functional capacity. In the evaluation of functional capacity, elderly people will be classified as independent or dependent (to a greater or lesser degree), or as being functionally incapable when having limitations in carrying out two or more daily life activities. The condition of dependence may be observed during their hospitalization and discharge. Despite the cure or healing of the condition for which they were hospitalized, and after this period, the family, voluntarily or because of the lack of other alternatives, assume the principal role of providing care to the elderly in a situation of dependence. However, this has happened withot systematized actions of support and teaching for the family carers. Because of the increase in the proportion of elderly people, geriatric rehabilitation tends to occupy and icnreasingly greater space in public health, as its ultimate objective is the recovery of the maximum independence and autonomy of the individual...
