Hypertension is a syndrome with a prevalence of 15% in adults and it is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. In recent years, Health Care authorities have focused their attention on the diagnosis of hypertension and especially regarding to educational programs. Accordingly, several campaigns have been launched with the objective of detecting and preventing its consequences. Our data were obtained from the "National Campaign for Detection and Treatment of Hypertension" conducted nationwide and also in Juiz de Fora. Seven thousand, six hundred and fifty two adult subjects (3% of the population of Juiz de Fora) had their blood pressure measured. It was found that 42.5% of the hypertensives were not aware of their high of blood pressure levels and, among those known to be hypertensive, blood pressure was not adequately treated in 74,8%. A higher prevalence of hypertension among men in their forties and in the black population was observed.
