ABSTRACT
Introduction: the health effects associated with exposure to emissions from industrial plants have been discussed in literature. There are reports that biological, psychosocial, socioeconomic, environmental factors, and perceptions of communities contribute to the socio-environmental vulnerability and determine the conditions and health outcomes reported by people in the vicinityof the oil industry. Objective: Analyze the health and environmental conditions through self-rated health in adults, wheezing in children and integrated indicators of environmental health of the population living in communities located around the PetrochemicalGuamaré (PPQ) in 2006. Method: Cross-sectional study consisting of monitoring of exposure to environmental pollutants and questionnaires of the "Household Survey on Risk Behavior and Morbidity from Diseases and Non Communicable" for adults and the "International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood-ISAAC " for children and adolescents. The communities were classified according to the preferred direction of the winds and the influence of emissions of PPQ in exposed (CE-A, B, C) and reference (CR-D, E). Analyses were conducted using logistic regression to determine variables associated with outcomes of interest. For the construction of integrated indicators of environmental health model was used chain Driving Force, Pressure, State, Exposure and Health Effects - FPEEE proposed in the conceptual framework of the GEO Health. Results: The average daily concentrations of pollutants monitored remained below the limits of air quality standards. Self-rated health was reported negative for 37.1% of respondents (95% :32,5-42, 0). The variables that most influenced the negative self-rated health concern to the community of residence (ORadjust: 2.38, 95% CI :1,56-3, 65) and quality of life (ORadjust: 4.78, CI 95% :2,56-8,92)...
