ABSTRACT
Anterior skull base cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistula is defined as the communication between the subarachnoid space and theupper air way. Its importance is due to the risk of development of central nervous system infection. The medical literature reports different definitions and classifications of CSF fistula, with unclear practical importance. The relationship among the different types of CSF fistula and their clinical presentation and prognosis are doubtful. In spite of recent technical advances, diagnostic confirmation and topographic location of CSF fistulae are still a challenge. The present review shows a critical analysis of the literature data concerning the classification, clinical and diagnostic aspects of CSF fistulae.
