RESUMEN

Estimar la calidad de vida resulta clave a la hora de tomar decisiones médicas. Al mismo tiempo, se trata de un concepto polémico y de difícil caracterización. Su relación con el valor de la vida humano es innegable pero aquí, nuevamente, topamos con otra categoría de difícil caracterización. Las dificultades no son menores cuando intentamos medir la calidad de vida. Sin ánimo de dar una respuesta definitiva, nuestra propuesta es esclarecer qué se entiende por calidad de vida y describir los distintos intentos para evaluarla. La elucidación del concepto de calidad de vida nos llevó desde el terreno de la industria y la teoría empresarial hasta el polémico ámbito de la antropología filosófica. Los intentos por operacionalizarla , así como los distintos criterios para su evaluación, mostraron serios problemas. Estos problemas nos condujeron a la estimación de la vida como valor y, por este camino, llegamos a la consideración moral de la vida y de la calidad de vida. Finalmente, la ambigüedad y vaguedad del constructo nos puso en riesgo de caer en un relativismo ético. La diferenciación entre calidad de vida de mínimos y calidad de vida de máximos evitó ese riesgo.

ABSTRACT

How estimate the quality of life is a central topic in medical decisions. All at once, this is a controversial and difficult concept. Its relationship with the human life value is undeniable but, here again; we find another category of difficult characterization. The difficulties are no less when we try to measure the quality of life. Without wishing to give a definitive answer, our purpose is to clarify what is meant by quality of life and describe the various attempts to evaluate it. The elucidation of this concept led us from the industry field and business theory to the controversial field o f philosophical anthropology. The different criteria for measuring the quality of life showed serious problems. These problems led us to estimate life as a vital value and, by this way, we reached the moral character of life and quality of life. Finally, the ambiguity and vagueness of the construct put us at risk of falling into ethical relativism. The differentiation between minimum quality of life of and maximum quality of life avoided that risk.
