Medo e ansiedade prévios à consulta odontológica em crianças do município de Acaraú-CE / Fear and anxiety previous to dental treatment in children from Acaraú-CE

RESUMO

Identificar os principais fatores causadores de medo e ansiedade do paciente infantil previamente à consulta odontológica. Métodos: Pesquisa descritiva, qualitativa, realizada no município de Acaraú - CE com 10 crianças de 4 a 6 anos de idade, que não apresentam dor forte entre agosto e setembro de 2006. A princípio, aplicou-se o teste de avaliação da ansiedade odontológica Venham Picture Test (VPT) modificado, um instrumento contendo um conjunto de figuras de crianças em diferentes estados emocionais, que foram apresentadas a cada criança para que apontasse com a qual considerava estar mais identificada naquele momento. O segundo teste, realizado antes do atendimento, consistiu em pedir que as crianças desenhassem à mão livre o consultório odontológico, o cirurgião-dentista e o pessoal auxiliar, perguntando a cada criança o que você acha do consultório odontológico ou do dentista? Os desenhos foram submetidos à análise ideográfica e categorizados em unidades de significados para a interpretação. Resultados: Três crianças no VPT e nove crianças no desenho apresentaram grau elevado de ansiedade. Fatores causais como motor (alta rotação), extração dentária e roupa branca puderam ser encontrados. Considerações finais Através do desenho conseguiu-se obter resultados de forma eficiente na identificação de alguns fatores que causam medo e ansiedade ao paciente infantil. O teste VPT modificado demonstrou ser rápido, de fácil aplicação e aceitação pelas crianças, porém, em alguns casos, foi contraditório com o desenho.

ABSTRACT

To identify the main causing factors of fear and anxiety of children previously to dental treatment. Methods: A descriptive and qualitative study held in the municipal district of Acaraú - CE with 10 children aged 4 to 6 years old, who did not present strong pain between August and September, 2006. At first, we applied the modified VPT (Venham Picture Test), an instrument containing a set of figures of children in different emotional states, which were presented to each child so that he pointed to what he considered to be further identified at the time. The second test, held before the consultation, consisted in asking to the children to free-hand draw the dental office, the dentist and auxiliary personnel asking to each child what do you think about the dental office and the dentist? The drawings were submitted to idiographic analysis and categorized in units of significance for interpretation. Results: Three children on VPT and nine children on the drawings presented an increased level of anxiety. Causing factors such as the motor (high speed rotation), tooth extraction and white clothes could be found. Final considerations By means of drawing we were able to efficiently obtain results in identifying some factors that cause fear and anxiety to the child patient. The modified VPT showed to be quick, easy to apply and acceptable to children, but sometimes was contradictory with the drawings.
