OR ?depression? OR ?mood disorders? OR ?mental health? AND ?congenital abnormalities?.
ABSTRACT
While prenatal diagnosis of congenital malformations can help parents emotionally prepare before dealing with the birth of a child with a congenital anomaly, recent studies have revealed a significant association with an increase in maternal psychological distress. The objective of the present article was to conduct a systematic review with respect to epidemiological studies of association between infant?s congenital malformations and maternal mental disorders. The review covered articles published in PubMed/MEDLINE, ISIWEB, Scopus, LILACS, SciELO and PePSIC databases, using the keywords ?mental disorders? OR ?depression? OR ?mood disorders? OR ?mental health? AND ?congenital abnormalities?. One hundred and eight studies were located, but after reading the abstracts only six articles were selected. The risks of minor mental disorders, especially anxiety and depression were higher in mothers of babies diagnosed with malformations than in mothers of healthy babies. The present review highlights the relationship between congenital malformations of the baby and its effects on maternal mental health during pregnancy and postpartum, which makes the subject of critical consideration for the of maternal and child health.
