ABSTRACT
Calcium supplements have been stimulated in osteoporotic patients in an attempt to prevent further bone loss leading to a stronger skeleton with fewer occurrence of fractures. Several benefits of calcium replacement have been described in recent years, as a modest reduction of fractures when associated with vitamin D, improvement of metabolic profile and blood pressure in hypertensive patients, resulting in possible benefit to the cardiovascular health. The analysis of several studies where calcium was used either or with vitamin D questions its favorable effects, furthermore,it points to an increased cardiovascular risk. In this article, the literature data on the effects of calcium on cardiovascular health was reviewed.
