RESUMO

O objetivo deste ensaio é examinar algumas influências psicológicas e filosóficas na obra de Edward Chace Tolman. Em primeiro lugar, descrevemos uma matriz de influências em uma perspectiva psicológica, encontramos o Behaviorismo de J. B. Watson e a Gestaltpsychologie de W. Kõhler e K. Koffka. Já em uma perspectiva filosófica, encontramos a influência do Contextualismo de S. C. Pepper e do Neorrealismo de R. B. Perry e E. B. Holt. Partindo dessa matriz de influências, buscou-se, então, elucidar a primeira fase da obra de Tolman, que compreende o período de 1922 até meados da década de 1930. Embora a presente análise se restrinja a esse período inicial, essa matriz de influências pode ser útil para a compreensão dos posteriores desdobramentos da obra de Tolman.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is to analyze some psychological and philosophical influences on the work of Edward Chace Tolman. We begin by describing a matrix of such influences in a psychological perspective, the Behaviorism of J. B. Watson, and the Gestaltpsychologie of W. Kõhler and K. Koffka; in a philosophical perspective, the Contextualism of S. C. Pepper, and the New Realism of R. B. Perry and E. B. Holt. From this perspective, we tried to elucidate the first part of Tolman’s work (between 1922 and the middle of the 1930’s). Although we have analyzed only this inicial period, we think this matrix of influences could be useful to understand the ulterior development of Tolman’s work.
