RESUMO

Até 2050 a Espanha será o país mais idoso do mundo e, nesse ano, 20 da humanidade (2 bilhões de pessoas) terão mais de 65 anos de idade. A indústria já está se adaptando para atender a esse enorme mercado. Mas será que os meios de comunicação estão atentos a esse megafenômeno de mudança social em todos os países? Neste artigo, estudamos o modo como dois grandes jornais espanhóis tratam o noticiário sobre a pessoa idosa. Também estudamos o papel social do jornalismo e o compromisso ético da profissão. Discutimos ainda se o estudo do jornalismo ambiental, na universidade, poderia contribuir com uma formação mais integrada dos futuros jornalistas, sensibilizando-os, inclusive, para esse aspecto da ecologia humana que é o envelhecimento da população.

ABSTRACT

By 2050 Spain will have the largest population of elderly people in the world and, in that year, 20 of mankind (2 billion people) will be more than 65 years old. The industry has already been adapting to reach this huge market. But are the means of communication aware of this mega-phenomenon of social change in all countries? In this article we shall study the ways two large Spanish newspapers handle the news about aged people. We shall also study the social role of journalism and the ethic commitment of the profession. In addition, we will debate whether the study of environmental journalism in the university could provide a more integrated education for future journalists, raising their awareness of an aspect human ecology that is the aging of the human population.
