A convivência com pessoas idosas em instituições de ensino superior: a percepção de alunos de graduação e funcionários / Interaction with elderly people in higher education institutions: the perception of undergraduate students and employees

RESUMO

Conhecimentos sobre o convívio intergeracional gerados nas IES são educacionalmente relevantes. Contribuem para a teoria e modificam as relações entre as diferentes coortes etárias. Realizamos um estudo com 53 sujeitos, sendo 47 alunos de graduação e 6 funcionários envolvidos em programas para os mais velhos. Os objetivos visaram a) verificar aspectos da natureza do convívio com os idosos e os benefícios associados; b) verificar possíveis modificações na percepção sobre idosos/velhice/processo de envelhecimento. Três instituições foram investigadas, sendo uma privada e duas públicas. O instrumento foi um questionário para levantamento sociodemográfico e percepção sobre a convivência com pessoas idosas na universidade. As análises revelaram que a área de ciências da saúde/cuidado é a principal de origem dos universitários. Os funcionários exercem atividades que os colocam em contato sistemático com os idosos por maior tempo em relação aos graduandos. As universidades abertas à terceira idade destacam-se como principal local para tal contato. A vantagem profissional mencionada pelos sujeitos foi intelectual. Em relação aos benefícios pessoais, destacam-se aprender dos mais velhos, relatado pelos funcionários, e relação intergeracional, indicada pelos alunos. Aspectos da imagem social e aspectos relacionamento social/físico/psicológico foram as mudanças na percepção mais apontadas pelos sujeitos.

ABSTRACT

Knowledge about the intergenerational interaction that takes place in Higher Education Institutions is educationally important. It contributes to theory and modifies the relations between different age cohorts. We conducted a study with 53 subjects: 47 undergraduate students and 6 employees involved in programs for the elderly. The aims were a) to investigate aspects concerning the nature of the interaction with the elderly and associated benefits; b) investigate possible modifications in the perception regarding the elderly /old age/aging process. Three institutions – one private and two public universities – were analyzed. The instrument was a questionnaire, used to conduct a social and demographic survey and to learn about the perception of the interaction with elderly people in the university. The analyses showed that the area of health sciences/healthcare is the main one concerning the origin of the university students. The employees perform activities that put them in a systematic contact with the elderly and they spend more time with them compared to the undergraduates. Universities that are open to the third age are the main place for such contact. The professional advantage mentioned by the subjects was intellectual. Regarding personal benefits, the employees mentioned learning with the elderly and the students reported intergenerational relationship. Aspects of the social image and of social physical/psychological relationship were the changes in perception that were most pointed out by the subjects.
