ABSTRACT
The review of beliefs and attitudes regarding old age is scientific and educationally relevant. In the university environment, the elderly break prejudices and show that it is possible to learn and develop during the last stage of the vital cycle. We conducted a study with 68 subjects:
47 undergraduate students, 06 employees involved in works for de elderly and 15 coordinators-professors from programs in the area of gerontology. Our aim was to verify beliefs regarding old age. Three institutions were investigated, one private and two public ones. The instrument was a differential semantic scale covering the factorial domains agency, cognition, social relations, and persona, concerning old age. The subjects from the three institutions presented answers with positive tendencies to beliefs regarding old age. Comparing the undergraduate students, employees, and coordinators-professors, the students showed more positive tendencies compared to the results of the coordinators-professors. The sample from the privative institution scored more negatively than the others in the domain of social relations.
