Background:
breast cancer is a neoplasm with a high incidence among women, and both the onset and evolution of breast cancer may be related to anthropometric and dietary factors.Aim:
to assess the nutritional status and food intake of patients with breast cancer receiving care in a breast service in the countryside of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Methods:
this cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study included 50 women with a diagnosis of breast cancer and evaluated the following variables reproductive data, time of diagnosis, lifestyle, anthropometric data, and food intake. Fishers exact test was used to analyze the variables. Results:
of the total study population, 90% were aged > 40 years, 68% were postmenopausal, 70% were in the post-treatment phase and 84% had never consumed alcohol. Statistical analysis showed a high prevalence of overweight/obesity (72%), with a mean body mass index of 28.6±5.6 kg/m², and a high prevalence of physical inactivity (72%). Mean daily energy intake was 1413.7 kcal/day, 27.3% of total lipids and 8% of saturated fat. The intake of fiber, vitamin A, C and E and selenium was below the recommended dietary allowance. The participants showed a preference for whole milk and red meat, low fruit intake, and little variety within the vegetable group. Conclusions:
there was a high prevalence of overweight/obesity in postmenopausal women, high rates of physical inactivity and low micronutrient intake. In addition, a large number of women were breast cancer survivors. These findings are important for the establishment of nutritional intervention actions to improve prognosis and prevent tumor recurrence.
