ABSTRACT
An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in 37 patients to whom a therapeutic perforating keratoplasty was performed in the Opthalmological Center from Dr Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso Teaching General Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, from January, 2009 to August, 2010, aimed at identifying the main clinical and epidemiological characteristics of those affected, and at determining the effectiveness of this technique as a surgical treatment alternative in severe ulcers of perforated cornea. Among the main causes of the corneal lesion in the serie, there were the bacterial and fungal infections; and among the most frequent postsurgical complications there were the corneal edema and the ocular hypertension. Corneal transplantation was very successful in most of the members of the case material, because it was possible to improve their vision.
