ABSTRACT
It is presented the historical background of mechanical ventilation that are the basis for analyzing the weaning process and the main researchers who have contributed, the most commonly used ventilatory modes and new ways in favor of the weaning process with emphasis on pressure support mode and its role in this process to take into account its use. It conceptualizes the weaning process according to different concepts of consensus to achieve common use, adapted to the Cuban context of intensive care units. It shows the predictors of greater and application use and which have provided better results in diminution of weaning failure and mortality.
