RESUMO

É apresentada aqui uma tradução para o português de extrato da Parte III (The self) do livro Mind, self, and society, de George Herbert Mead (1863-1931), o importante filósofo norte-americano, da Escola de Chicago. O autor é um dos fundadores do pragmatismo, com Peirce e Dewey. O livro Mind, self, and society é uma obra póstuma, publicada pela primeira vez em 1934. Foi organizado por alunos de Mead, a partir de artigos anteriores do autor, manuscritos, notas de aulas e registros estenográficos. Seu impacto nas Ciências Sociais, especialmente na Psicologia Social, foi grande, pois o autor considera que mente e self se formam nos processos sociais. Neste extrato, o surgimento do self a partir da atuação do jogo e da brincadeira é descrito e é também apresentada a noção e o funcionamento do outro generalizado.

ABSTRACT

A translation into Portuguese of an excerpt from Part III (The self) of the book Mind, self, and society, by George Herbert Mead (1863-1931), the important American philosopher, from the School of Chicago, is introduced here. Along with Peirce and Dewey, the author is one of the founders of the pragmatism. The book Mind, self, and society is a posthumous work, first published in 1934. It was organized by some of Mead’s students, based on the author’s previous writings, manuscripts, class notes, and stenographic records. Its impact on Social Sciences, especially on Social Psychology, was great, for the author considers that mind and self are formed in the social processes. In this excerpt, the appearance of the self after the performance of the game or the joyful activity is described, and the notion and the operation of the generalized other is also introduced.
