Caracterização dos cuidadores de pacientes oncológicos / Characterization of the caregivers of oncological patients

RESUMO

Este estudo buscou caracterizar os cuidadores de pacientes oncológicos, identificando suas reações diantedo diagnóstico de câncer, o apoio dos familiares aos cuidadores e a estratégia destes para o conforto do paciente. Trata-se de um estudo descritivo transversal. Os dados foram coletados entre os meses de abril a junho de 2009, por meio de entrevista com 73 cuidadores de pacientes com o diagnóstico de câncer, atendidosno ambulatório de um hospital de ensino do interior do estado de São Paulo. A análise dos dados indicou que dentre os cuidadores predominaram mulheres, com idade média de 48,6 anos. Em geral, o conhecimento do diagnóstico de câncer ocorreu juntamente com o paciente. Cerca de 70% dos cuidadores relataram ficarem chocados com o diagnóstico. Como estratégia de enfrentamento, a maioria relatou que se apega a Deus para continuar auxiliando e confortando o paciente. A dificuldade e a sensação de impotência para lidar com a situação foram mencionadas pelos cuidadores e 65,75% relataram dividir o tempo dispensado aos cuidados com outras pessoas. O cuidador geralmente acompanha o doente desde o início da doença e todo tratamento, por isso, ele precisa estar preparado física e emocionalmente para a tarefa que desempenha. Conclui-se, que os cuidadores não são preparados para o papel de cuidador de um paciente com câncer, o que gera sofrimento não só para o paciente, mas também para os cuidadores. Este fato deve ser considerado pelos profissionaisda saúde, principalmente, o enfermeiro, que tem a responsabilidade de planejar as intervenções, orientação, suporte e apoio aos pacientes com câncer e sua família.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to characterize the caregivers of oncological patients, identifying his reactions facing cancer diagnosis, the relatives´ support for these caregivers and their strategy toward the patient´s comfort. It is a cross-sectional study. Data were collected by an interview with 73 caregivers of patients with cancerdiagnosis in the period from April to June of 2009. They were attended in the outpatient clinic service of a school hospital in the interior of Sao Paulo state. Data analysis pointed out that among the caregivers, middle-aged women of 48.6 years old were the majority. In general, the knowledge of cancer diagnosis has occurred together with the patient. Nearly 70 % of the caregivers reported the diagnosis had shocked them. As strategy to cope, the majority reported trying to be with God to keep on helping and comforting thepatient. Some difficulties and impotence feelings to deal with the situation were claimed by the caregivers; 65.75 % of them reported to share the cares with other people. In general, the caregivers follow the patient from the beginning and the whole treatment; therefore, they have to be well prepared physically and emotionally for this role. In conclusion, these caregivers are not prepared to look after a patient with cancer; this results suffering not only for the patient, but also for them. This fact must be considered by the health professionals, mainly the nurses, since they have the responsibility of planning the interventions, direction and support to the patients with cancer and their family.
