RESUMEN

En los últimos años se han realizado numerosos estudios para determinar la relación entre la enfermedad periodontal durante el embarazo y su efecto en el peso de los recién nacidos. Anualmente nacen mas de 20 millones de niños con bajo peso, es decir con menos de 2500 gramos. Entre las principales consecuencias que sufren los bebés con bajo peso al nacer, tenemos el riesgo de morir durante los primeros meses y años y aquellos que sobreviven son más propensos a padecer alteraciones del sistema inmunológico y enfermedades crónicas, como la diabetes y cardiopatías. Durante la gestación se producen cambios hormonales que conllevan alteraciones vasculares, variaciones en el sistema inmunológico y modificación de la microbiota, lo que condiciona a una respuesta exagerada del huésped frente a la agresión microbiana. A la vez, los patógenos periodontales a través de sus toxinas provocan que el organismo de la gestante libere mediadores inflamatorios como las citocinas IL1, IL6 y FNT y prostaglandinas E2 los cuales intervienen tanto en el mecanismo de parto pretérmino como en el nacimiento de niños con bajo peso.

ABSTRACT

In recent years there have been numerous studies to determine the relationship between periodontal disease during pregnancy and its effect on the weight of newborns. Are born annually more than 20 million children with low weight, that is less than 2500 grams. Among the main consequences suffered by infants with low birth weight, the risk of dying during the first months and years and those who survive are more likely to suffer from disorders of the immune system and modification of the microbiota, which affects an exaggerated response of the host in front of the microbial assault. At the same time periodontal pathogens through their toxins, that provoke the body of a pregnant release inflammatory mediators such as cytokines IL1, IL6 and FNT and prostaglandin E2, which both involved in the mechanism of preterm birth as in the of children with low weight.
