Las consideraciones estéticas actualmente han influenciado en las decisiones al momento de realizar un tratamiento. La práctica odontológica debe estar preparada para las necesidades de los pacientes. El tratamiento no sólo debe cubrir las necesidades estéticas del paciente sino también cuidar la salud periodontal. La técnica quirúrgica de alargamiento de corona está indicada en el caso de los pacientes que presentan coronas clínicas pequeñas, dientes pequeños, agrandamientos gingivales inducido por fármacos, y cuando el espacio biológico ha sido invadido. El éxito de cualquier tratamiento restaurador está en respetar la integridad de la unión dentogingival. Cuando el espacio biológico ha sido invadido, es necesario un alargamiento de corona; no respetar este espacio podría provocar inflamación en los tejidos gingivales.

The current aesthetic considerations have influenced decisions at the time of treatment. The dental practice must be prepared for the needs of patients. The surgical technique of crown lengthening is indicated for patients with small clinical crowns, teeth small, drug-induced gingival enlargement, and when the biological space has been invaded.
