RESUMEN

Se estratificaron los 169 municipios del país usando la incidencia del período 1999-2002 como indicador único, y caracterizados según estratos de densidad demográfica y actividad económica predominante, para identificar las prioridades territoriales en función de la estrategia de eliminación de la tuberculosis en Cuba. Una cantidad apreciable de territorios alcanzó la meta de eliminación, mientras que el grueso de los municipios reportó tasas por debajo de 10 casos por 100 000 habitantes; esto permitió afirmar que la iniciativa de eliminación es factible en el territorio nacional. Las herramientas de estratificación permitieron identificar que algunas de las áreas más vulnerables tienen una alta densidad poblacional.

ABSTRACT

Based on the incidence rate of the 1999-2002 period as the only indicator, the 169 municipalities of the country were stratified. They were also characterized according to their population density and predominant economic activity, with the objective of identifying the territorial priorities for the implementation of the tuberculosis elimination strategy in Cuba. A good number of territories fulfilled the elimination target whereas most of the municipalities reported incidence rates lower than 10 cases per 100 000 pop; this showed that the elimination initiative is feasible throughout the national territory. The stratification tools allowed determining that some of the most vulnerable areas have high population density.
