Aplicación de un programa educativo a los escolares sobre enfermedades de la cavidad bucal y medidas preventivas / Application of an educational program about the diseases of the oral cavity and preventive measures to elementary school students

RESUMEN

Actualmente existe un consenso sobre la importancia de medir en la población estudiantil el nivel de conocimiento sobre salud oral y el impacto de las intervenciones educativas. La enseñanza de la salud oral es una responsabilidad compartida por padres, profesores, odontólogos y demás miembros de la sociedad involucrados en el desarrollo de la salud pública. Con el objetivo de aplicar un programa educativo (PE) sobre enfermedades de la cavidad bucal y medidas preventivas se determinó el nivel de conocimiento (NC) de los escolares. Se realizó una investigación cuasiexperimental antes y después de la aplicación del PE. Ochenta y cinco (85) escolares entre 6 y 10 años de edad cursantes del primero y segundo grado representaron la población del estudio. Se entrevistó a 66 niños que asistieron el día que se inició la investigación. En sesiones sucesivas se aplicó el PE para medir el NC sobre salud oral y prevención de enfermedades orales. Antes de la aplicación del PE, el NC sobre las enfermedades de la cavidad oral fue "malo" 68 por ciento y 14 por ciento "bueno" variando a 32 por ciento y 66 por ciento, respectivamente después de la aplicación del programa. El NC sobre medidas preventivas varió de "regular" (74 por ciento) antes del PE a 50 por ciento después de su aplicación. Al comparar los promedios del nivel de conocimiento antes y después, se observó diferencia estadísticamente significativa (p=0,001). Existe la necesidad de implementar y fortalecer programas educativos dirigidos a la población escolar a fin de mejorar su calidad de vida y a modificar hábitos

ABSTRACT

There is an agreement about the importance of measuring in the elementary school population their level of knowledge about oral health, and the impact of educative interventions. Teaching oral health is a sharing responsibility of parents, elementary school teachers, dentists and the rest of the society members involve in the developing of the public health. With the purpose to apply an educational program (EP) about oral diseases and preventive measures, the level of knowledge (LK) of elementary school students was determine. A quasiexperimental investigation was conducted before and after the application of the EP. Eighty five (85) of the students between 6 and 10 years of age of the first and second grade, conformed the study population. Sixty six school children who were at the school at the beginning of the investigation were interviewed. In successive sessions an EP was applied to measure the LK about oral health and prevention of oral diseases. Before the application of the EP, the LK about oral diseases was "bad" 68 percent and 14 percent was "good" varying to 32 percent and 66 percent, respectively after the application of the program. The LK about preventive measures varied from "regular" (74 percent) before applying PE to 50 percent after its application. When comparing the LK before and after means, a statistically significant difference was observed (p=0.001). There is a need to implement and fortify educational programs in the school children with the purpose to improve their quality of life and to modify habits.
