ABSTRACT
Hospital-acquired infections, a concept that has recently evolved into healthcare-associated infections, represent a public health problem and are an indicator of the quality of service provision and management. They imply an increase in the use of antimicrobials and hospital stay and are associated with an increased risk of mortality, with social and economic consequences for patients and institutions and, therefore, an increase in the costs of care for the health system.
