ABSTRACT
The Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a disturbance of functional type frequently seen in the medical practice, characterized by the absence of demonstrable anatomical or biochemical dysfunctions, and, by virtue of its symptoms, it is cause of multiple nuisances as much for the patient as for the physician. The studies carried out regarding their etiology have identified it as a biopsychosocial dysfunction, influenced by the alteration of the motion function, visceral hypersensibility and psychosocial factors, as well as a neurotransmitter series, that for their activation or inhibition are the cause of the symptoms and, based on their knowledge, they have allowed to establish the pillars for their therapy. The diagnosis of this dysfunction settles down easily by certain approaches based on the clinic, like the Manning´s and Rome´s approaches, continued by tests that allow us to discard an organic base as possible cause of the symptoms.
