Clubes sociais: práticas esportivas e identidades culturais / Social clubs: sportive practices and cultural identities

RESUMO

O objetivo deste estudo é identificar como as práticas esportivas oferecidas pelos primeiros clubes sociais foram reutilizadas na produção de identidades culturais em Porto Alegre na transição do século XIX para o século XX. A análise documental das fontes impressas revelou que tanto os clubes que congregavam os teuto-brasileiros quanto os que reuniam o grupo social luso-brasileiro eram mantenedores de tradições. A ginástica alemã era a prática mais representativa dos clubes de alemães, além do remo, até o princípio do século XX. Neste período, contudo, os luso-brasileiros organizaram seus primeiros clubes de remo, reutilizando esta prática esportiva para a produção de representação de outra identidade cultural na cidade. Assim, os luso-brasileiros foram rompendo com sua identificação restrita ao turfe e produzindo identidades no associativismo esportivo assim como os imigrantes alemães.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to identify how sportive practices offered by the first social clubs were reutilized in the production of cultural identities in Porto Alegre in the transitional period between the 19th century and the 20th century. The documental analysis of printed sources revealed that both clubs - those who congregated Teutonic-Brazilian and those that gathered the social group of Portuguese-Brazilian - were tradition maintainers. German gymnastics was the most representative practice of German clubs, besides rowing, until the beginning of the 20th century. In this period, however, Portuguese-Brazilian organized their first rowing clubs, reutilizing this sportive practice to the production of representation of another cultural identity. Thus, Portuguese-Brazilian kept breaking their restrictive identification to turf and producing identities in sportive associations just like German immigrants.
