ABSTRACT
This study aimed AT determining the frequency of prelingual deafness diagnosis in the absence of risk indicators in order to measure the importance of the universal neonatal hearing screening. We selected 25 from 247 papers. The total number of deaf children reported was 23,158. In 8,246 (35.6%) children, the cause of the hearing loss was not possible to be determined or the cause was not considered to be in the risk group. It was concluded that newborn hearing screening could be able to detect in advance 55.3% more children with prelingual hearing impairment than the neonatal screening carried out only in children belonging to the risk group for children hearing loss.
