Objective:
To evaluate the perspective of SUS (Brazil's Unified Public Health System) patients, in the city of João Pessoa-PB, due to the need of endodontic treatment as well as their knowledge about this type of procedure. Material andmethod:
It is an inductive study with a questionnaire containing opened and closed questions. Data were submitted to statistical-descriptive analysis with quanti-qualitative procedures. Data were statistically quantified and analyzed by the EPI-INFO 7.01 program. Results:
A total of 64% of the questioned individuals know endodontic treatment and 87% know root canal therapy. Nevertheless, just a few of them answered properly about the procedure and 83% of these data were transmitted by dentists. The majority (90%) does not miss the dentist's appointment for being afraid of; however, 8% would not be submitted to endodontic treatment, having preference for exodontia of the mentioned tooth for being fearful to feel pain before, during or after the endodontic procedure. Only 10% of the patients had no fear to begin the endodontic treatment. Among the patients who accomplished the endodontic treatment (55%), 72,8% of them were satisfied with the result. Conclusion:
The evaluated patients had the perception that the endodontic treatment was the best solution for dental problems followed by exodontia as the second option, in spite of the unfamiliarity with the procedures to be fulfilled and the fear to feel pain in this kind of treatment.
