RESUMO
JUSTIFICATIVA E

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND AND

OBJECTIVES:

The objective of this study is to evaluate the incidence of renal computed tomography findings in CT scans of the abdomen performed in patients admitted in a university hospital.

METHOD:

This is an epidemiological retrospective study. We reviewed medical records of patients undergoing abdominal computed tomography at the University Hospital of West Paraná in the period from September 2010 to August 2011. The data collected were identification, sex, age, date, clinical indication, specialty of the solicitants and CT findings. This information was stored in a database, Microsoft Excel software, and was analyzed using descriptive statistics arithmetic average, median and standard deviation.

RESULTS:

During that period, 281 medical records of patients were analyzed according to the available data. The median age of patients was 44.7 ± 20.4 years and males predominated in 65.5% of cases. The most frequent findings were nephrolithiasis, hydronephrosis and simple cyst in 19 (6.8%), 16 (5.7%) and 15 (5.3%) patients, respectively. One hundred eighty three (65.1%) patients had no changes on images.

CONCLUSION:

The main CT findings observed in this study were nephrolithiasis, hydronephrosis and simple cyst. These data helped to analyze and understand aspects of the current local situation, besides serving as a basis for stimulating further research.
