ABSTRACT
The aim of the present research was to determine the percentage of the dental biofilm in patients with malpositioned teeth with and without orthodontic aparathology, compared to individuals with correctly positioned teeth in both arches. A convenience sample was composed of 150 individuals of both sexes, aged from 15 to 30 years, divided equally into three groups of 50 according to the characteristics of tooth position. The percentage of biofilm was quantified using the O'Leary et al. plaque index, categorized into four levels. Results showed that in each group, independent of dental position and orthodontic aparathology, dental biofilm presented varied percentages; it was verified significant difference in categorized index between groups, with higher percentages for group 3 ( patients with braces) and also in relation to males for this same group. It was observed in the sample that malpositioned teeth and correction of this position by orthodontic aparathology (bands and brackets) contributed significantly to the accumulation and retention of dental biofilm, compared to individuals who had malpositioned teeth
