Análisis de las noticias sobre suicidio publicadas en un diario local del Quindío, Colombia, entre 2004 y 2011 / Analysis of suicide news published in a local newspaper in Quindío, Colombia, 2004 - 2011

RESUMEN

Objetivo: identificar si las noticias de suicidio informadas por el periódico La Crónica del Quindío se ajustan a las recomendaciones entregadas por la Organización Mundial de la Salud para divulgar este tipo de sucesos. Métodos: se realizó una investigación de carácter descriptivo cuantitativo y se sistematizaron y analizaron las noticias de suicidio informadas por el diario entre los años 2004 y 2011. Resultados: en el período estudiado el periódico informó de 283 suicidios, 84 % cometidos por hombres y 46 % entre los 10 y 29 años. En el 42 % de los casos apareció la palabra suicidio en la nota y en el 89 % se describió el método. Igualmente, se encontró que en el 48 % aparecía la imagen de la víctima y solo en el 2 % informaban de una línea de ayuda. Conclusión: en general el diario no sigue las recomendaciones de la OMS, cuya conducta constituye un posible factor de riesgo del acto suicida en la región.

ABSTRACT

Objective: to identify whether the suicide news reported in the magazine Crónica del Quindío are in keeping with the recommendations given by the World Health Organization to spread these types of events. Methods: a descriptive quantitative research was conducted and suicide news reported during the years 2004 and 2011 in the above mentioned magazine were analyzed and systematized. Results: the newspaper reported 283 suicides in the period under study, 84 % committed by men and 46 % between 10 and 29 years. In the 42 % of the cases, the word «suicide¼ appears in the note and in the 89 %, the method is described. Similarly, it was found that, in the 48 % of the cases, the picture of the victim is presented and in the 2 % a help line is informed. Conclusions: in general, the newspaper does not follow the WHO recommendations, behavior that constitutes a possible risk factor for suicide acts in the region.
