RESUMEN
Fundamento la enfermedad periodontal es una de las enfermedades bucales más frecuentes en el ser humano, ocupa el segundo lugar dentro de las afecciones bucales más padecidas por el hombre . Objetivo:
describir el comportamiento de la enfermedad periodontal inmunoinflamatoria crónica en pacientes mayores de 5 años del área de salud de Sopimpa en el municipio de Fomento en el período de septiembre 2009 a diciembre del 2010.Metodología:
se realizó un estudio descriptivo de corte transversal. La población fueron 518 pacientes y a través de un muestreo aleatorio simple conformaron la muestra 153 pacientes. Los resultados se presentaron en tablas de distribución de frecuencias absolutas y relativas. Las variables edad, sexo y estado periodontal.Resultados:
predominó el grupo etáreo de 20-59 años, el sexo femenino fue el más representativo; en cuanto al estado periodontal la gingivitis crónica prevaleció en este mismo grupo.Conclusiones:
se demostró que hubo un predominio del sexo femenino, así como de los procesos superficiales (gingivitis crónica) y estuvo afectado mayormente el grupo de edad entre 20 y 59 años.ABSTRACT

the periodontal disease is one of the most frequent oral diseases in human beings. it occupies the second place among the oral diseases suffered by man.Objective:
